What is an Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program?

A New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) licensed outpatient substance abuse treatment program is called an Article 822. Drug treatment provided through this program is intended to help addicted individuals stop compulsive drug seeking behaviors. Treatment provided through this program may occur in a variety of settings, take many different forms, and last for different lengths of time. Because drug addiction is typically a chronic disorder characterized by occasional relapses, a short-term, one-time treatment is sometimes not sufficient. For some, treatment can be a long-term process that involves multiple interventions and regular monitoring.
